AT&T already has plans to launch their NarrowBand IoT network in the United States by the end of this year. But by next year, AT&T will launch their NB-IoT network in Mexico, further expanding technology capabilities to their consumer base.

What is IoT?

The Internet of Things, or IoT, is an Internet connection of everyday devices. Any standalone device—from kitchen appliances to cars—which can be controlled or monitored from a remote location is considered an IoT Device.

Currently, hundreds of companies are linked to IoT. However, only a few companies lead the industry in providing IoT platforms.

AT&T’s Mexico IoT Rollout

With this rollout, AT&T hopes to provide a platform rivaling industry leaders. The telco has already begun providing LTE-M service to consumers in the United States. With their IoT, AT&T will be able to offer their NarrowBand IoT and LTE-M services to customers who need to connect an entire variety of IoT devices.

AT&T will be able to use its existing cellular coverage network, allowing them to use infrastructure already in place. Corporate consumers will be able to connect their IoT devices through this low-power wide-area network, or LPWAN.

Competing with Verizon

Verizon is AT&T’s main competitor, especially when it comes to LPWANs. Verizon has also confirmed plans to establish their own NB-IoT in the United States before the end of 2018. With both companies pushing for expanded LPWANs, IoT devices will be able to grow as well, and both Verizon and AT&T will be able to offer even more support to customers without a specific hardware or networking path.
